Here's my Q: I came across a web site w/ an embedded vid clip that I
wanted to save to disk. It's a Flash clip and Safari's Activity Window
says it's a .flv file. I saved it to disk using Option-double-click
from the Activity Window, but it downloaded as name.flv.txt. I tried a
lot of stuff to make it viewable but no luck. Even saved the page as a
web archive but the saved archive is much smaller than the clip so I
assume the clip isn't included.
I think it must be in a cache somewhere because I can play the embedded
clip from the orig. web page while offline. But I can't find it in any
Library, nor can Spotlight find any files anywhere in my computer of the
size of this file. Is it that invisible?
I'm aware that even if I do find the cached file, getting it into a
player of some kind is a whole 'nother can o' worms. But one step at a
time...
TIA

Don't know if it's possible to hate Flash more than you, but I sure hate
it, too! I use Camino, and whenever I hit a Flash site I'll get the
spinning beach ball for who knows how long. Most of the time I'll end
having to force quit Camino.
There was a similar question to yours in one of the Mac newsgroups a
while back asking how to capture Flash videos. Here are two suggestions,
quoting the original posters:
------------------------
Use Safari. Let the video load. Open the Activity Monitor window.
Double-click the movie file name. (It will typically be the largest file
listed.) It will download to your download folder.
-------------------------
-------------------------
Let the video load completely. Then select Go To Folder from Finder's Go
Menu. Enter this:
/private/var/tmp/
You will now be inside one of the several hidden folders that make up
the innards of OSX. Inside here is a folder called folders.501. You will
see a file called TemporaryItemsFlashTmp0000--drag this to the desktop
and rename it appropriately with a .flv file extension. You now have
your video. Note that this file will not turn up in a search as it lives
in one of the hidden UNIX folders that Spotlight doesn't index.
-------------------------
As a side note, EasyFind will find that 501 folder, and any other
hidden/invisible files or folders.
Playing a .flv video is another matter, as you said.
