Are there any Mac clients - either or both in OS 9 and OS X - that can connect

I think that Microsoft had some version of its client on its web site
for this for Mac OS 9, but it was pretty scary. Given that OS 9 doesn't
even have memory protection, using that flaming piece of goat dung is
probably not something you want to do unless you've got very fresh
system backups on hand.
I doubt there's anything sane that runs under both OS X and OS 9,
not counting old OS 9 code that runs under Classic mode (like the
aforementioned goat dung).
For just OS X, there are several choices, some of which have already
been mentioned in this thread.
I'm _guessing_ that iChat can't, is this correct?
Good guess.
Anything out there that works, even a kludge?
Far from a kludge, my personal favorite is AdiumX, which can be found
here:
http://www.adiumx.com/
This is a unified client that can handle MANY different protocols and
chat systems, and does so with a nice native Aqua interface. I use it
exclusively for Yahoo and MSN connections. If it would support real-
time video chat, as iChat does, I would switch over to AdiumX in a
heartbeat for AIM and Google Talk as well. It is otherwise a very good
product. And free. (Donations are accepted.)
Check out their web site for a complete feature list and other protocols
it supports.
