There are other alternatives.
What are they?
1 he has a bad USB modem.
Modem is good - they both were - tested on other machines.
2 some piece of software he's installed, a haxie or kext or even just an ordinary app which loads on startup, does something which the USB modem software doesn't like.
A possibility - check out what all is running. User name has been removed to protect the innocent. Tell me which app the USB modem doesn't like.

3 he's doing something, which he may not even realise he's doing, which the USB modem software doesn't like.
I doubt that - I'm not stupid - I know how to plug in a USB modem and setup the software to access it and dial out. Have done it on, interestingly enough, Power PC systems.
4 he really was using a hub and doesn't want to admit it. I had some problems with a (non-Apple) USB modem attached by a hub; they went away when the modem was attached directly to the back of the Mac. When I got Apple USB modems for the office, I expected that there might be trouble if I attached then by a hub, so I tried that first thing. There was trouble, so I made a rule that all USB modems, Apple, non-Apple, attach directly the the Macs in question. No more problems of any kind, and certainly no problems of the kind he describes. Just to be sure I personally sent a fax from each machine in the office which has an external modem to a different machine which has an external modem. No trouble sending or receiving, at least not here.
Given that many, many, MANY other people don't have his problem, and that Apple at <http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303262> says, and I quote:
"Will the Apple USB modem work when attached to the USB port of an ADC display or when attached to an external USB hub?
It is not recommended to attach the Apple USB modem to the USB port of an ADC display or to an external USB hub. This modem works most reliably when connected directly to your computer."
I think it's quite likely that he was using a hub.
You are an idiot and a jerk - the fact that you don't believe that I am not using a hub and that the only way that you can be right is to pull up an Apple support page backing you up and insisting that I am using a hub proves it. It may well be a software problem that I haven't yet discovered.
iMac as it has never worked - time to take it back for another - my 3rd intel iMac so far.
Interesting. Your 3rd dead iMac to date. Hmmm. Could it be possible that the problem is not with the hardware?
The OP didn't say the machine was down, just has one problem that could be software related, although the fact that it happens consistently when a hardware device is plugged in and works fine when it doesn't would indicate faulty hardware. If the modem works on another computer, then there is something off in how the iMac behaves when the device is plugged in.
He says that he's had the same problem on three machines to date. Other people, myself included, have not had this problem, on rather more than three machines. The probability is high that the problem is due to something in his setup whether he wants to admit it or not. The probability is much lower that he, purely by accident, happened to get three iMacs which have exactly the same problem which the vast majority do not have. I would say that either the modem itself is bad or he's doing something wrong.
What are the odds that two different modems bought at two different stores would both be bad - unless Apple has flooded the market with bad product.
He also said that there are many reports of people having his problem, even on Apple's discussion site, <http://discussions.apple.com/>. (Quote "which is all over Apple support pages") I had a look there, using the search string 'usb modem'. I found quite a few trouble reports. Nothing I found seems to match his problem. Perhaps I missed it, so if he could post the URL of even one thread in one Apple discussion which concerned this problem? While he's at it, if he could post the URL of a thread concerning this problem from a non-Apple discussion group? I didn't even bother go looking in non-Apple web discussion groups, there are too many of them. I also don't see any other reports of such problems on usenet, despite his saying that the problem is prominent on newsgroups, too. Perhaps I missed that, too. In which case a Google Groups URL pointing me to those other threads might be helpful. I think that this is his problem, and his alone, but if he can provide links showing otherwise I would of course concede that it's not just him. I little evidence to support his contentions would be nice, though.

Kernel Panic using modem on Intel iMac

Received the new iMac two days ago and all seems well under Rosetta, including the AOL client, which Walt Mossberg reported would not work. I got the external USB modem as a backup if/when my cable service dies. Every time I try to dial out I get a kernel panic as soon as I click connect. I sent the problem logs into Apple support with note upon restart. Anyone else try this and have a problem?

I worked with the Web Chat support from India and tried a few things with no luck:
1. unplugged other USB devices (printer) same panic.
2. tried the Apple USB modem in a PowerBook and it worked fine.

So if I understand you correctly, the panic is occuring when you're trying to dial out to AOL right? Have you tried different local access numbers?

You also mentioned:

Can you try using the external modem on your PowerBook to see if the panic occurs there as well?

1. I was dialing out to a local ISP, not AOL.
2. I tried the USB modem that came with the Intel iMac and it did not fail.

Just for kicks, can you check to see which modem script you're using when you have the external modem connected to your new iMac?
To do this:
- Open your Network Prefs.
- Go to your External Modem's configuration section.
- Click the Modem tab.
--> Next to the Modem pulldown bar, which script is selected?

No sense in your continued responses to yourself in an attempt to keep bumping up your post if you can't touch the affected computer. Or, am I misunderstanding which Mac you are having the problem with?

That is a panic log, not a modem script.
Exactly how do you have the modem configured in the network preference pane? If you have chosen the wrong script, such as one for an internal modem or one for an external model that is not the one you have attached it could, possibly cause a panic.
The error Type = page 14 seems to mean that the directory or page table entry needed for the address translation has a zero in the present bit, or the current procedure does not have sufficient privilege to access the indicated page.
Anyway, I believe that indicates a software issue, probably in the settings. Since the external unit worked on another computer that should reduce the chances that this is a hardware issue.

I was responding to another poster question as to which script I was using and posted it was the Apple External 56k v.92. I know what the panic log is, I posted that too. I have to assume it is a 10.4.4. Intel build issue as it doesn't occur on the PB 10.4.4. Apple has an open problem log and the dump, so I hope someone will get to it sometime in the future. What worries me now is that my MBP may have the same issue as I use the modem more frequently on the road.

Sorry, I missed the connection ..Duh on my part!!
Anyway, other than an errant setting I don't know what else could be causing the issue. Wish I knew more or could help more. It's been so long since I have used dial up or a modem that some of the intricacies of their use escape me.

I've been troubleshooting somebody else's new Intel iMac that's having the exact same problem when dialing in using the external USB modem. She's dialing into a local ISP, I had her try both the external usb v.92 and v.90 scripts with no luck. Early on she was able to dial in a few times successfully but now it seems to kernal panic every time she uses the modem. I'll be looking at it in person tonite and will give Apple a call if the problems continue....

Notice that this question is not answered. Apple tech bumped me up to the 2nd level when I called in after 2 kernel panics and system freezes everytime i tried to dialup using the apple usb external modem. when it was plugged in the system was unstable and might freeze at any time. they said that engineering would be informed. there are so many problems with this, i just believe that the usb external modem is not an important issue, with bigger fish to fry using airport, etc. the internal modem is gone from the new units, the external modem causes system problems which apple may or may not address - we'll see. i hope they address it in an update - that's what i get for buying a new model before all the bugs are worked out. it may yet be returned to the store.

An update on the modem issue. My MacBook Pro arrived this week and was able to successfully dial out using the USB modem. Still same problem on the iMac.

Apple USB modem causes iMac 20" OS X 10.4.5 core duo kernel panic. Period. I could not test it on an eMac G4 PPC on which the manual says it is supposed to work because I have 10.3.9 Panther on it and there is no driver for the USB modem. I do not wish to upgrade the OS on my eMac. I could not find one to download at the Apple web site either. This smells like dialup users are very low on the list at Apple these days. I plan to contact support, but if anyone can tell me how to get a USB modem driver to run in Panther on an eMac, I'd appreciate it.
This is a problem that I called Apple tech support about shortly after I bought my iMac 20" core duo. This is the second Apple USB modem that I have bought and both of them cause the same problems. The Apple USB external modem always causes a kernel panic when attempting to dial out. I can plug in the modem before power up or after and this always happens. Whenever the external USB modem is plugged in, the system will have unpredictable freezes and lock ups and always causes a kernel panic when attempting to dial out. I hear no dial tone as the problem occurs before dial out gets started. Apple - please address this issue in a software update or make it possible for dialup users to get new hardware ( a replacement computer rather than having to bring the unit in for a hardware fix) that has this problem fixed. I had to buy Airport Extreme just to get online with a v.90 modem (the USB modem is v.92 with fax.) It is despicable that Apple is dissing dialup users and hasn't yet addressed this issue which is all over Apple support pages and newsgroups. Why force dedicated Mac users to use an older Mac or a PC because you don't support dialup and fax on the new intel models?
