Well, there are Internet Access Providers and there are Internet
Service Providers. If he has and IAP, he can check the email on
his ISP.
The distinction is virtually never made in the consumer market --
the term Internet Service Provider is used for both. Different
providers simply have different ideas of what features constitute
"Internet Service" -- some just provide a connection, others also
provide email, Usenet, portals, personal web pages, etc. At the
far end of the continuum is AOL, which nearly takes over the entire
computer.
Ah, so that is why AOL is like EMACS.
Except that "Emacs" doesn't take over your entire computer, and is
actually a powerful and usable application. Unlike AOL. On the other
hand, Emacs *can* take over your life. And even make coffee for you.
But at least it includes a psychiatrist!
