I don't think Logitech makes a firewire camera (do they?) so,
he'll have to look into getting iChatUSBCam as mentioned by
another poster. I use a third-party firewire camera on one
computer and an Apple iSight on the other and frankly, the
iSight is easily worth the premium I paid for it over the other
camera.

Well, it's not really a "European households" thing - PC users
are awfully hard to convince to get Macs, even after they see
how easy things like video chat are. I know plenty of folks who
really would like to get Macs but they've been convinced,
generally by misinformation, that they can't make do with them.
Especially when talking about things which folks don't understand
very well, people frequently just go along with what the majority
has.

I've got all of my immediate family using Macs - I just can't
waste the time it used to take to support their Windows systems.
I haven't managed to keep the extended family from falling into
the Windows world and told most of them that they are on
their own with respect to support now. In fairness, the Windows
machines are far more stable and less trouble now than they used to
be, but I do have to get on some of their cases to do things
like update their virus protection on a regular basis and I don't
go near things like trying to help them install video cameras and
drivers...

Kind of. The latest version of AIM that AOL is pushing on their
website ("Triton") does not work with iChatVideo. For Windows-
to-windows chatting, it's better than the older version of AIM,
but for Mac-to-Windows, it's no go. On the Windows site, you
need the older AIM 5.5 or 5.9.

This page has lots of great details about getting this to work:

My understanding of this is that only the fully paid version of
Trillian supports the video chat. I've a couple of friends who
use the free version and love it, and I'm going to try to
convince another to pay up for the full version shortly.

I'm also very much looking forward to what Skype comes
up with. They have apparently rolled out some video support
in version 2 betas, so far only for Windows, but they seem
committed to bringing full features to the Mac, too.
