You may be right: I freely admit that I havent got the vaguest idea
what I am doing but I thought that I had just made an .avi file on my
Archos AV500 and copied it to my PC HDD prior to burning it onto a CD..
It played on the PC and on a Mac from the CD, - but is this simply not
the best way of doing things?
No. Assuming whatever you want to play it on will accept the file than
yes it is the best way. However, if you are planing on sending it to someone
with an older DVD player, it won't work.
Let's for now, assume that the destination is a PC or a Mac. Then you can
just burn it using PC/Mac disk onto a standard DVD (4.5g). Do not try to
burn it if it does not fit, Toast will split it up and you need a
program to put it back together.
It's 4.7GB (counting a GB as 10^9 bytes) or 4.38GB (counting a GB as
2^30 bytes).
I usually use VLC to play these files,www.videolan.org. It's free (as in
beer)
and plays almost anything. If you are sending the disk to someone without
Internet access, you can download the PC and Mac installers (around 50 meg
total) and stick them on the disk too. It is also available for Linux, but
installing it is a little more complicated than just running a generic file.
VLC (VideoLAN Client) is definitely my preferred app as well.
Playing it on a DVD player is more tricky. Almost all DVD players made in the
last 5 years or so will play DIVX files. They will also play files encoded
with the open MPEG-4 type encoders, which is probably what your Archos creates
(at least that's what it looks like from a quick web search).
The DivX-compatibility assertion here is overstated. Most Philips and
Toshiba models will play them, a few Panasonic models, (virtually) no
Sony models, and a random assortment of other makes. Even when they do
play DivX/xvid, only a subset of those will play Type 10 MPEG-4 files
(the ones with H.264, for example). Check the box or online references
for compatibility.
If it will play them, then you can just copy it to a PC/MAC disk and the
player will play it. If it is something really special, you should try
a sample before a lot of effort, nothing in this game is 100% certain.
A PC/Mac disc will usually work on the standalones, but I've found a
higher rate of success with UDF-formatted.
A good indicator is a USB port. If the DVD player has a USB port, it is
very likely it will play the files the archos creates.
If you have an option of file format, set it to DIVX or DIVX compatible files.
Making DVD's that are real DVD's is a much more complicated process and
it goes far beyond what I can write here. Look for tutorials online and then
come back (or send them to me via email) questions.
You can also direct posts with authoring questions to "ATTN: sbt" in
this group and I'll try to help out.

Again I think I am oversimplifying here: The Archos gives the option
to record as mpeg or avi files. I chose avi as a default. Arent I
entitled to assume these avi files will play on any computer which has
either quick time installed or whichever version of media player plays
avi files? I THINK I have played them on some standalone dvd players
but am not too concerned with this UNLESS someone tells me that the
quality of the re-played avi file isnt going to be as good as that of
some encoded file created with ffmpeg or videolan or adobe video etc
etc?
