Am having major problems with Toast 8 Titanium, trying to write 3.8 GB
of videos to a DVD+R on my new Macbook Pro: Firstly it ran for a few
days without writing anything. Then when I tried again, specifying
2x, it gave some esoteric nihilistic error message which basically
ended with buffer underrun and then said it had completed without
writing anything to disc but that I should now label the CD!
Now it includes everything, has the 'check for buffer underrun' box
checked and still won't start writing. However it does now show (on
4x) 'REMAINING 11:08' with 0% completed. This has been there for a
day or so now, to no one's particular surprise.
Is this just a completely dud program? I am deeply suspicious from my
windows days that it seems to be a Roxio program which endemically
didnt work with windows and which always had to be kept off Windows
hard drives for fear of it doing untold damage to the whole windows
installation.
If I have to delete it, should I simply try to figure out how to write
a multi-file DVD with the OSX utility, which I have never managed to
do before? Or is there a better program out there now? Is this
something I can improve by installing Snow Leopard or is this a
program which needs updating/major rewriting every time Apple issues
some new security update?
- Which drive model is in the MBP? It is a known problem that some models won't burn with +R, though they are certified to be able doing so.
- Have you tried with other medias such as -R and not +R? - gold, blue or silverish surface?. Some models won't burn with gold or blue-suraced media, some will. - My internal Sony HIARCH won't burn with +R/blue surface and neither with +R/gold, but nicely with +R/silver or -R/gold. My external LaCie burns everything.
Also before trying to burn anything, you can lete Toast save as a 'Video image' and then burn the image directly. Some video files simply are un-burnable if they aren't saved as an image before burning...
One of my friends is a highschool teacher and she should make some DVDs for educational use out from a 'master DVD', the school got from our national TV's public service system. She was unable to burn anything on her WinXP - neither built-in, Nero or Easy MediaCreator 7 could do anything. She called me and I tried on my XPPro with Easy MediaCreator 2009 with the media she got from the school - some noname +R. No luck either.
Tried with Toast 10 with same media type, - no luck. - At least Toast 10 gave an understandable message telling that it was unable to burn "...Toast cannot read or write the xxxxxx video_TS file. The ._ts code is wrong..." - I saved the original DVD as a video image with max. quality in full video_TS+H264 format. Burned the image on my LaCie drive using a TDK -R media in 8x speed. Success at first try. For safetiness I then played the new DVD on 2 different DVD stand-alone players, my MDD and my MacPro both with OS X and in XPPro. The DVD played nicely and smooth on all of these.
I've been using Toast right since ver. 2.x or 3.x and have never had any kind of trouble using it. That's why I've stuck with it since 1995....
Cheers, Erik Richard
