Odds are that the app itself is fine and it's your mailboxes and/or
settings that are damaged. It's hard to say more without significantly
more information from you. However, since you're apparently quite ready
and willing to discard all your saved email and stuff, you can reset
mail by deleting:

~/Library/Application Support/Mail
~/Library/Mail
~/Library/Mail Downloads
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.*

(The ~ above indicates the home folder for your user account and *
indicates everything beginning with the preceding name.)

Of course, before you do this, you may want to consider telling us
what's wrong with Mail and dealing with the problem directly.

I am a novice to trying to fix Mail problems, so I think that by
throwing away Mail prefs, I've must had caused a major problem, by
throwing away something that I shouldn't.

I looked at the files-to be thrown away-if that what I want to do.
Looking at ~Library, I can't find Mail in Application Support folder.
There is Mail and Mail Downloads folders in ~Library. In Preferences I
have com.apple.mail.plist and com.apple.mail.searchhistory.plist. Should
there be others?

Is that of any help? I hope so. Thanks for any help.
