Hm, this sounds very strange to me... I myself have a 25mbits connection
- also with just one MAC address, but I have never had any problems
using 5 machines, - MacPro (both OS X and Win XPPro), PowerBook G4, MDD
Dual 1ghz, Beige G3/1133mhz and an oldie of a PM 9600/350mhz...
Instead of a router, I bought a 8-port Belkin Gigabit cabled switch, (my
home network is cabled all over the house), - connected it to the
broadband modem - and voila - all machines are able to go online when
and if i want to.
You can't use a switch or hub with Comcast unless you pay extra for
multiple IPs.
Not true, at least for me. I had been using a hub for years with
Comcast until I recently replaced it with a router. I have never paid
for more than the lowest tier of residential service with Comcast.
I'm using the Linksys wrt54g router now, and have had no problems at
all.
I just checked my speed at speedtest.net. I'm at 27 Mbps dl, 7 Mbps
ul. That is pretty typical these days for me. Again, I'm paying only
for the lowest residential tier. Don't know why my connection is so
fast.
Something funny happened a few months ago. I was having intermittent
problems with my internet connection. Comcast guy comes out, lays some
new wire in on the street and to my home. Problem fixed. Then he tried
to talk up the new speed levels. He talked about getting sppeds of up
to 22 Mbps for 20 bucks more. I sheepishly said I was already getting
that if not more. We checked it and I was getting 30 Mbps dl that day.
End of sales pitch.
As James wrote, Comcast will normally only allow one MAC.
