Since TM uses hard links to minimize actual storage, it may be that
deleting the _oldest_ backup only frees up some catalog entries and
very little real space.

Now that seems to make a bit of sense. But if in fact that's what's
going on, it sounds like TM is ending up deleting extremely recent
files -- files I've backed up within the past 24 hours -- certainly
nowhere near the ("as advertised") oldest ones that were saved to the
TM drive.

What are the sizes of the TM volume

700 GB (or 750 GB, depending on your definition of "GB"). It's currently
about 98% full.

and the source volume?

300 GB (or 320 GB, depending on your definition of "GB"). It's currently
about 85% full.

What is the
volatility of the source volume?

Biggest frequent changes are due to updates to my Entourage database (about
4 GB). But it gets backed up only 5 times per day. (One of these days, I'm
going to trash that app...been putting it off.)

You can break that monster into more (system) manageable parts by
replacing it with a sparsebundle disk image mounted on
~/Documents/Microsoft User Data. Not all the bundle files will be
updated during normal operation and the backups will take less time and
space.
