I produce a monthly newsletter for my local Macintosh user group. The
newsletter is produced in Pages and exported as a PDF which is made available
online as a download.

The problem is that occasionally text which should be displayed as black is
displayed fine in Preview but as a light gray, in Adobe Reader or Acrobat.

The only cure for this that I have been able to find is to change, in Pages,
the incorrectly displayed text from black to a dark gray and then export
again as a PDF. Then the dark gray text will display as dark gray.

Admittedly the change from black to dark gray is hardly noticeable but I'm
curious as to why this is happening and what it is about Reader and Acrobat
that they can't always display the text as intended as can Preview.

Any thoughts and/or experiences and/or solutions will be most appreciated!

A few possibilities:

1) Check the Accessibility settings in Acrobat and Reader. They might be set
to display black text as light grey. (This reduces the contrast, which some
people find to be easier on the eyes).

2) In Acrobat, uncheck the Advanced -> Proof Colors menu item. Some printing
methods use a "black" ink that isn't, and Acrobat's Proof Setup and Proof Colors
options can simulate how this looks. (Adobe Reader 7.0 doesn't have this
feature, I don't know whether 8.0 does.)

3) Try choosing "black" from a different section of the Color dialog in Pages.
The black you get by setting the Grey Scale Slider to 0 is different than the
black you get by setting the CMYK sliders to 0-0-0-100 or 100-100-100-100. They
look the same in Pages, but other apps may interpret the resulting PDF
differently.
