The MOD files "appear" to be MPEG-2. At least, when I was handed one
recently, changing the extension to MPG allowed it to play in MPEG
StreamClip, which said that the one I had was MPEG-2 with AC3 audio. To
get it into your version of iMovie, rename it to have the MPG extension
and then export it in MPEG StreamClip -- if you have the disk space, I
would recommend exporting to DV as then you only have one lossy
conversion when you encode.
Interestingly enough, the file played in QuickTime when I copied it and changed
the extension to .MPG. But it played in 4:3 instead of the 16:9 it was shot in.
I'm converting to DV format in MPEG Streamclip now and it appears to be
exporting as a 16:9.
While I was (far) less than thrilled with iMovie'08, the new version in
iLife'09 is a significant improvement. It's missing a few things that
HD had, but has some useful features of its own that weren't present in
HD. I'm still getting used to the new UI (old habits are hard to
break), but iMovie'09 is a keeper in my opinion. Also, it recognizes
the .MOD files directly, which saves the conversion described above.
Too bad Apple's not offering it as a free upgrade they way they do with iTunes.
