Try this.

1. Open up a hard disk directory in column view.

2. Click once on some disk or folder that appears in the far left column.

3. Type in a word or two that you know is part of the name of any file
within the chosen disk or folder or is in any text within any document
(including, yes, amazingly enough) a text clipping.

4. Don't do anything more, don't Return or anything, just watch. You
should then see the result and if you click on any one result to merely
highlight it, you can see the file path at the bottom of the window there.

Now try it with something you do not know is there! But be careful to note
that failure to find it might be due to it not being there <g>

What's stated above doesn't seem to agree with the behavior I see.

Regardless of whether I have a Finder window open in icon, list, column, or
cover flow view an entry of text in the toolbar will check the entirety of
everything enabled for Spotlight searching and show the "qualifying" items.

If on the other hand I switch to "find" mode by either selecting the
"Find..." option in the Finder File menu or enter Cmd-F when Finder is the
application I can then constrain the search by selecting such as a mounted
drive or folder which will establish the bounds of the search, not to mention
that I can further constrain the search by selecting a cascade of conditions.
