I truly hope that I'm missing something in the instructions, because an
IM client that requires the recipient to wear earphones to receive
notification is useless to us.

Is she using a first-generation iPod Touch, or a second-gen model?

The first-gen models had no external speaker, so neither Beejive nor any
other application is going to get it to make noise without earphones.
