The file extension really doesn't matter, IME. What matters is the

Hmmm. Well, I haven't been able to make the process work in 10.5 using
the .cdr, but no problem with the .dmg. I have a vague memory of this
problem with 10.4.11, but can't be sure.

As I said, the filename extension *doesn't matter*. Are you using the
correct *format*?

Right. "CD/DVD Master" yields .cdr by default, which for me cannot be
used to successfully burn a backup copy or restore to a hard drive
partition in order to use that partition as an install disk (much faster
than the DVD). What has worked, contrary to published suggestions, is to
make a standard .dmg, either compressed or uncompressed, encryption off.
This is what worked for James.

If I try to burn a copy or restore to a partition using the .cdr image,
I always get a burn or restore error near the end. Don't remember the
exact wording. The burner checks out fine for other burns and isn't used
in the restore to a partition anyway. I have no idea why it's going
buggerup.

I'm not sure what you are dealing with there. That's not been my
experience at all!
