I just got my Macbook Pro...my first mac...I have lots of home videos

Layer 3.  Any ideas?  HELP?!

You should know the reason you are having this problem to begin with is
because you created these video files with Microsoft's proprietary and
closed codecs. Since Microsoft purposefully doesn't provide access to
these codecs on other operating systems, it's no surprise you're having
trouble using them on a non-Microsoft system. This is one of the prices
you pay for buying into Microsoft, unfortunately.

Apple's QuickTime uses the open MPEG format by default, and MPEG is
supported by most operating systems today. So you won't have this kind
of trouble with videos you create on a Mac.

I also made the mistake of buying a Sony miniDVD based camcorder to
record home movies. Finally bought, a nice HDV Camcorder to rectify
that situation. The reason the files are in .avi is due to the stupid
DVD home videos. That being said I ripped them with AVS4You which
will allow me to convert them to .mov files or mp4 files, which I will
do...Which would you suggest for using on the Mac and in iMovie?
