Hi,
Hopefully quick question: how do I take a 'picture' of the current
appearance of my desktop into say a jpeg file?
The standard way to screenshot a desktop is Command + Shift + 3. Perhaps
you know this and are wanting to know how to obtain it as a jpg? There
are a few ways, but if jpg is the format you generally want for
screenshots, you can change the result (it is not already jpg by
default) in Tiger by using a terminal command:
defaults write com.apple.screencapture type image_format
killall SystemUIServer
If you want to use this screenshot immediately for something you can
also save it to clipboard so that you can paste it into whatever you
want. Suppose you are preparing a picture in an image program like
Photoshop in which you want to include a screenshot of your desk. You
can:
Command + Control + Shift + 3
and then paste it into your Photoshop rectangle you are working on. You
then can save the lot as a jpg.
More useful generally, btw, is using the number 4 instead of 3 in the
above instructions, this enables you to capture the part of the screen
you want more precisly.
