There used to be all sorts of programming software available for the
Mac (this was 25-30 years ago). I need something like a FORTRAN
compiler, or BASIC, or C, or Pascal. I found one FORTRAN compiler, but
it is expensive ($550.), Is there anything less costly for FORTRAN or
anything at all for the others? I am using Matlab which might be used
in a pinch, but one of the more general and flexible languages would
be much preferred.

Thanks for the help.

Google much? ; )

To start, you have Apple's free Xcode software development environment,
which is based on GCC:

<http://developer.apple.com/tools/xcode/>

And then you have a slew of other Apple-supported tools:

<http://developer.apple.com/tools>

Not to mention the entire GCC command-line compiler ecosystem, with many
compilers and many languages (including fortran, I believe), and a
variety of Mac compiler offerings from IBM, Intel, and so on.

Mac OS X has more software development tools available today than any
previous version of Mac OS.

BTW, you'll likely get a better response to Mac programing questions in
one of the comp.sys.mac.programmer.* news groups.
