I don't know how to simplify my statement without changing its
meaning.
Here it is again. "I've never been able to use Spotlight to find
where stuff is".
It is indeed simple, and cannot be simplified. You were, however asked
to clarify, not simplify. That is not the same thing. Using Spotlight to
find where stuff is involves multiple steps, and unless you clarify, we
can't know at what step you got stuck, and then it becomes hard to help.
Is it ...
.... that you don't know how to activate Spotlight? (Click on the
magnifying glass in the menu bar.)
.... that you don't know what to do with the resulting search box? (Type
a relevant word.)
.... that you don't know what the resulting list means? (It's a bunch of
hits, as file names and sorted by document type.)
.... that you don't know the location of a specific hit? (Hover the mouse
over it, and the path will pop up.)
.... that the abovementioned popup doesn't stay? (Hit Show all at the top
of the menu, then click on a file name in the resulting list. The path
shows up at the bottom, where you may, for example, double click a
folder in the path to open it.)
.... that you don't like the GUI way, even though you are a Mac user?
(Run the command mdfind word in Terminal, where "word" is the thing
you are looking for.)
.... none of the above? (Then clarify, don't simplify, your request.)
