I'll watch for accidental key presses.

You seem to do that a lot (accidentally press you function keys)!

Maybe you should toggle System Preferences > Keyboard & Mouse > Keyboard Shortcuts > Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys, and try it that way for a while.

I know it might look that way but I'm not hitting them accidentally. I have a bit of an unusual situation going on here with the computer.

I have the MacbookPro set up in the living room on a special table I designed just to handle it. It's sort of like a TV table. It allows me to work near my wife who is recovering from a major operation. There's a lot of distraction while I'm working but I don't want to leave her alone and use the IMac downstairs.
The TV of course is in the same room and she's watching it while I work.
Sometimes I have to manually lower the system sound if I have a file I need to access that has sound with it so it doesn't disturb her.

Usually I remember when I've lowered it but there have been times when I've found the sound slider lowered and didn't recall lowering it myself.
I guess my question was to eliminate anything in the system that might be lowering it so I'd KNOW it was me that was somehow forgetting it.
Probably sounds dumb I guess, but my memory isn't what it used to be :-)

After reading the responses and finding that nothing in the system should be doing it, at least I now know it HAS to be me forgetting I did it manually.

I still haven't figured out the missing Mail doc icon but your suggestion is probably what was happening.
To tell you the truth, the OS is so stable that when something unusual happens with it, I have a tendency to ask here to eliminate the system as a source.

Believe me, I very much appreciate the time you folks spend answering an inquiry.
