As TM deletes older folders as the TM-disk runs out of space, it seems

what's not, or what's to be deleted and what's not to deleted. TM does
that for me. Or do I? Second question.
TM will indeed delete files without telling you (save the first time)
when your backup disk runs out of space, but the first files deleted
will be the ones that
1) you deleted yourself from your main disk
2) and they are the oldest in the archive.
In other words, TM can't delete a file that is still on your HD, for
instance.
Now, I don't know if this helps, because for big folders (like typ.
photo series) you'll rapidly grow out of HD space anyhow.
For me in such cases I burn a pair of DVDs regularly ("a pair" = twice
the same, which in my case definitely suppressed the situation where for
no reason THAT peculiar photo on that 4-year-old DVD is unreadable).
Then you must use a DVD management tool too (I use tri-catalog because
it keeps large imagelets of every photo, but they are others and as of
late it became uselessly complicated)
Still, it may be that with a really huge backup disk you can forget all
the above and live happy with Time Machine. Indeed this may be the
trend; I see my own NAS has a plug on its side to "continue
expanding"...
