2. Suppose I get someone at home to make an iso copy of the installation
CD using dd or some such tool, and I download it to my computer here

CD? Or does Microsoft have some sneaky way of foiling that?
I imagine it would work just fine, assuming the utility that creates te ISO image copies the entire structure of the CD, and assuming the download completes successfully.
For whatever reason, using dd didn't work to create a usable iso image.
On the other hand, I had someone at home use Disk Utility to create
the image. That worked fine. Then I used scp to download the file
and it worked fine.
Actually, a nifty little thing I noticed is, you don't need to actually
burn a CD. Just double click on the iso file and it mounts and opens
the installer, just like you popped the CD in the drive. I did the whole
install that way directly from the iso file. Of course, it's faster
reading the data off the hard drive than off a CD. So, the only reason
to burn a CD is to save some disk space. Of course, creating the iso
from the CD in the first place takes a long time, so this is only
relevant to a few people in special circumstances.
