I've put in sales/support queries (regarding headers included in
overview.fmt databases) to several of the larger providers today and
will post the results here.
I have received one response to my query about overview.fmt database
headers so far, from someone named "Bumblebee" (I kid you not) at
Easynews:
My support query:
Hello,
As you may know, sophisticated news client use filtering techniques
that allow one to create filters/rules based on various news
headers. For instance, if I know a certain spammer or troll uses
Microsoft Outlook Express version 6.00.2900.3138 to post messages to
Usenet, I can create a filter/rule that will match any post whose
"X-Newsreader" header contains "Microsoft Outlook Express
6.00.2900.3138" to effectively kill those posts so I do not have to
read or see them.
Some news providers have their overview.fmt database set to include
only the bare minimum of headers - this seems to be a default set:
Subject:
From:
Date:
Message-ID:
References:
Bytes:
Lines:
Xref:full
Note that Path, User-Agent, Newsgroups, X-Newsreader, and other
headers are missing from this list. Unfortunately, if other headers
are not included in the news provider's overview.fmt database, users
will not be able to use those headers in filters/rules. This is
because the news client uses the XHDR command to retrieve the
headers found in the filter, which causes the news server to look
for matching headers in the overview.fmt database, and because those
headers are missing from the overview.fmt database the XHDR command
will generate an error.
Recently, Giganews purchased my news provider, Supernews, and, in
the process, moved Supernews customers to a Giganews server where
only the default headers are included in the overview.fmt database,
which means my news client now generates errors when I attempt to
read news groups (because I have a lot of filters that depend on
certain headers being included in the database). So it appears I am
in search of a new news provider.
Can you please tell me what headers you include in your overview.fmt
database?

Apparently "Bumblebee" thinks the mere existence of headers in a _post_
equates to their being included in the _overview.fmt database_, which is
incorrect. It's obvious "Bumblebee" was unable to read and comprehend my
question. I politely explained that was not the answer to my question
and asked for "Bumblebee" to forward my post to a server administrator
who can answer the question.
