iTunes volume level on iPod

I have a few songs that play back on my iPod nano with a significantly
different relative volume compared to playing them on iTunes. These
are songs where I manually adjusted the volume. They had been way too
quiet, so I goosed the volume up 100% in iTunes and they sounded about
right. But, on the iPod, they blast. Any thoughts on what's wrong?
In searching on this group, I came across some discussion of the Sound
Check option in iTunes Preferences and decided to turn it on, but
wonder about two things:
1. A few years ago there was some discussion that Sound Check and
Sound Enhancer was distorting some music, which is why I had it turned
off. Does anyone know if that's improved?
2. Do the volume settings from Sound Check carry over to the iPod?
Many thanks.
Martin
