I also like to be able to categorize "children's music" or "Christmas

Analyzing for different types of smart lists can be interesting, and
being able to use the "rating" as a category of your own choosing can
be a tool to use.
I would just put "Christmas" or "children" in the Comments field or
alternatively make a custom Genre for the Smart playlist to search. Are
you saying for example that you use 3 stars for "Christmas" and 4 stars
for "children's music"?
Actually, I have those keywords in comments. But I combine a few
characteristics to get a playlist that might include Nutcracker or
Messiah which are in my Christmas list - but not exclusively.
There are other ways of doing this, but rating has a characteristic
that comments don't have - they are visible and changeable from the
iPod.
Maybe rating can mean to you "I need to do something with this song".
You have a playlist of rated songs that works like the book stack next
to your bed. While you are out, you basically yellow-post-it that
song to remind you.
The point is, if you think outside of the box, there are other
possibilities with this flag.
