I'm a bit confused about the screen saver function vs the power option turning off the monitor. Assuming that during the day I'd be using a screen saver I can select a screen saver say at 15 minutes but I'm assuming that using the SS I wouldn't be putting the monitor down at all. But when I move the slider for the monitor to never, it tells me this could shorten the life of the monitor.
Should I use a saver and select a high shut down number short of never like say 3 hours?
Personally, I use a short time for the screen saver - say 5-15 minutes. Then I use a longer time for the screen sleep - say 30 minutes to an hour or so max.

Ah ok...then I was figuring it out correctly. I couldn't see the advantage of the screen saver if it just ran until the monitor shut down if the shut down was scheduled for a low number of minutes.
I guess the main advantage of the saver is if you DO select a higher number of minutes before shutting down the monitor.

if you can't decide between JR's very small setting for sleep (though longer than your original) and my inclinations, do a simple log of yourself. Really! How often do you go away from your machine and come back to use it after it goes to sleep? If quite often, I would increase the time accordingly. Use commonsense, if you don't want to leave it onall night or when you are away for a day, fine, set accordingly (or just swithch it off).

HD's are designed to spin for thousands and thousands of hours.

Already done, and thank you for all the help.
