I had a USB NTFS-Formatted (windows) drive connnected to my iMac and
it showed up immediately in Finder. Recently, I installed vmware and
brought up an XP vmware session and was able to connect it in the
session. Since then (even after several reboots), I can't seem to get
the drive to appear in Finder.
When I load "disk utility", I see the 74.5 GB drive (Model ST980821
1A) partitioned as follows:
74.5 GB ST980821 1A Media
|
---> disk1s1
---> USB
to the left of the "USB" is a folder with a red line through it - and
when I get more info, I have no rights to change anything, including
giving myself rights - it's all grayed out.
If I try to mount disk1s1, I get "The disk 'disk1s1' could not be
mounted. Try running First Aid on the disk then retry mounting".
Problem is, all the buttons are grayed out (verify disk permissions,
repair, etc) when it is selected.
If I click on USB, it is already mounted (even though it doesn't show
up in finder). If I try to unmount, it says "The disk 'USB' could not
be unmounted. Make sure that all applications and files are closed on
this disk"
I did all this right after a fresh reboot before and after unplugging/
replugging in the drive.
Please Help!!!
Thanks.

Follow-Up:
I re-installed the latest version of MacFuse on my Leopard OS and now
when I highlight "USB", I can click "verify disk" and "repair disk".
Only problem is, as soon as I click one it tells me the disk cannot be
unmounted. Ugh!
Thanks Again,
JayDee
Disk Utility can't do _anything_ to NTFS-formatted volumes, other than mount
'em, unmount 'em, and reformat 'em.
As for MacFUSE, may I suggest that you get NTFS for Mac, at
<http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/26288/ntfs-for-mac-os-x>, instead? That
utility actually works seemlessly.
Before getting NTFS for Mac, I'd try two simple things:
1 Shut down the Mac, and unplug the drive, and plug it into a Windows box,
and see if the drive mounts there. Whatever happens, mount or not, try to
check the drive out with Windows NTFS fixers (CHKDSK and/or Scandisk come to
mind, at a start...) to see if there's a problem with the volume.
2 plug the drive back into the Mac and see if it mounts this time. Make sure
that VMWare is _not_ running... and if it doesn't mount, unplug the drive,
turn on VMWare, and plug it back in.
If that doesn't work, get NTFS for Mac...
