Cmd-click on bookmark bar folder

I just upgraded my Mac at work to 10.4.11, which includes the Safari 3
upgrade. I'd been using the beta at home ever since it came out, but my
home and work usage styles are different enough that I hadn't
encountered this issue until now.
First of all, I don't use tabbed browsing. I know some people think
tabs are the greatest thing since sliced bread, but I've just never
cared for them. I prefer using separate windows -- I have a 24-inch
monitor so I can easily accomodate several windows, to look at things
side-by-side rather than switching between tabs. Cmd-click opens a link
in a new window (I've unchecked "Cmd-click opens link in a new tab" in
preferences), and I use this frequently.
On my work Mac I make extensive use of bookmarks. We have many intranet
web sites and applications, and I have them organized hierarchically,
and going from the bookmarks bar. So the contents of this bar is mostly
folders that open as menus.
In Safari 2 I could Cmd-click on the menu title and the menu would open,
and then I could navigate to the specific bookmark I wanted. In Safari
3 this works the same for a regular link in the bookmarks bar. But when
I do this on a folder, it apparently wants to open a tab containing ALL
the links in the folder. A warning pops up asking "Are you sure you
want to open 65 bookmarks in tabs?"
I eventually discovered that I can get the old behavior by clicking on
the menu title normally, and pressing Command when I get to the specific
bookmark. But the old way is easier, and the habit is ingrained in my
fingers, so I'd like to be able to keep doing it. Does anyone know if
there's a way to get this back? I don't see anything about it in
Preferences->Tabs.
