I recently attempted to burn a simple dvd-r with iDVD 6.0.3. I haven't
done this in quite a while, and it's probably the first time that I've
used iDVD since upgrading to v6, for what it's worth...

I first imported a 90 minute movie into iMovie 6.0.3 from a digital
video cassette. No problem. Then opened the movie in iDVD 6.0.3 and
gave it a simple, one title menu and then pressed burn to let the
software do it's thing... After much passage of time the disk was
finally burned.

When I put it into the drive on my computer, DVD Player doesn't
automatically launch and start to play it... but I am able to use DVD
Player to play it, manually, so to speak.

When trying to play it on a standalone player, it doesn't work.

Did I somehow do something wrong in this chain of events? I thought I
was doing it as simply and directly as possible... I now have a
VIDEO_TS folder on the burned dvd-r... does it make sense to try
burning a disk directly from the VIDEO_TS folder? (saving me the
hassle of re-encoding? or will whatever problem that is present in the
first disk just be recreated in burning a second?)

Confused, as per usual, when i comes to this video stuff... Any
insights would be most appreciated.

I'm running OS X 10.4.10 on a G4 1.25ghz dp w/1 gig ram...

Many thanks,

Okay, among the things to check are:

1) What format does the Mac say the disk uses (should be UDF or UDF
Bridge)? If it is HFS, HFS+, or ISO 9660, that will be the reason the
standalone player doesn't recognize the disk

2) Check whether your CDs & DVDs System Preference pane still has DVD
Player set to launch when a DVD is inserted. If not, that could well be
the reason that you can play the VIDEO_TS in DVD Player manually, but
it doesn't load automatically.
