Safari and imbedded Windows Media streams

This is a radio station that I listen to frequently online.
Previously I had an iBook G3 (1.33 GHz processor) that shipped with 10.4 and had
been upgraded a few times, but not to the most recently available version of
10.4. This setup played the above URL perfectly without launching Windows Media
Player as a separate app.
I am now using a MacBook and the version of OS X that shipped on it was 10.4.10.
This machine would not play the stream embedded in the above Web page; it
launched Windows Media Player as a separate app. I upgraded to Leopard and this
problem still persists. Opening the above URL gives a notice that the page
contains a plug-in that Safari does not recognize, and gives me the opportunity
to open WMP, which does play the stream. This is annoying and I'm wondering what
plug-in may have been present on the old iBook that's not present on the new
MacBook that allows Safari to play the stream.
It should be noted that Firefox and Netscape play the stream from within the Web
page just fine, without the need to open WMP as a separate app.
As an aside, the lack of ability for the version of Safari installed on the
iPhone to play embedded Windows Media streams is a major liability for the
iPhone. Apple can't advertise a true wireless Internet experience until the
iPhone will play streaming audio from Web sites.
