Insert the DVD into your Mac's DVD drive -- if it plays in DVD Player
on your Mac, then the problem is almost certainly a compatibility issue
between your TV's DVD player and the media being used. You need a drive
in your DVD Player that recognizes DVD-R media. You can check at
videohelp.com to see what media is compatible with the player you have.

Just as a note, my neighbor's got one of those "all in one" TVs that's
about 5 years old and it doesn't handle any burned discs -- only the
pressed discs like those used in commercial DVDs.

Thanks. I can burn a DVD+R. If the -R didn't work in the set, might
the +R?

As I said, it depends on the specifications of the player in your television. Look up the specifications of your television to see what type of CD/DVD media it can play.
