historically, once apple announces an actual ship date, any mac
purchase made after that time will be entitled to a 'free' update
(usually $10-20 for 'shipping and handling' so it isn't actually
'free'). there is no reason to believe that it will be any different
with leopard. since leopard should ship in october, such an
announcement is most likely due this week or next week.

Do we get the same shipping and handling charge if we pick it up at an
Apple store?

as far as i know, the upgrade version must be ordered from apple; it is
not available in stores.

also, the upgrade version is slightly different than the full retail
copy. it requires an existing installation of os x, whereas the retail
copy can install onto a completely erased drive. this isn't a huge
deal for those who are upgrading, but it is a bit of a pain in the
event of a full reinstall (two systems must be installed -- the
original followed by the upgrade).

When you say "it requires an existing ...", is this just a licencing
thing? A Leopard install presumably has no reason to require that Tiger
be there?
