Quicktime will play AVIs just fine, though you might need
to add an appropriate codec (ie. divx).
The only reason to reconvert from avi (and likely divx)
to something else (ie. .mp4 and H264) is if you want to
play them on an iPod or AppleTV which doesn't do divx.
Once you've got the appropriate codec handy for QT to
use, things like iMovie will deal with the original AVIs
just fine.
You can also play just about anything with VLC Player
and it's capable of exporting in different formats, too.
