I'm a PC user trying to learn about Mac OS X on the cheap, using a 266
mhz iMac with 192 megs of Ram.
I installed a 20 gig hard disk, partitioned it into two 3.8 gig and a
12 gig sections, copied the OS 9 over from the old disk to the first
partition, then installed OS 10.2 on the second 3.8 gig partition. I
then updated to 10.2.8, and installed some security updates using the
update utility.

I'm not sure what the point of partitioning a disk that small is. I'd
be tempted to just create one big partition and reinstall.

I found the instructions for all that on the net, and it seems to work
fine. I then downloaded Firefox and I'm trying to install it but
having problems.

I open the downloaded file, and it mounts on the desktop as a disk
image. I open that, and it runs Firefox. However, it does not seem to
actually install it as Firefox does not appear as a choice in
"Applications", and it never asks me where I want to install it.
(which would be the 12 gig partition, to save space on the boot
partition.)

Just drag Firefox to where you want it. That's it - an "install" is
basically you deciding if you want to keep it, and where. Usually that
just involves dragging and dropping.

I am logged in as administrator, so I'm befuddled as to why Firefox is
not installing as I would expect. I'm reminded of the first time I
used a Mac, back in the early 90's. I couldn't figure out how to eject
a floppy, and felt like an idiot...

Maybe you want one of those Macs for Dummies (no offence) books? Or
failing that, Apple has web pages to help PC users like yourself.

Thanks for the reply. The point of the small partitions is that
(according to the info I found online) this old 266 mhz iMac requires
that all bootable partitions be in the first 8 gigs of the hard disk.
Hence two 3.8 gig partitions, one for OS 9, one for OS 10.2.8.

OK, I tried your suggestion and was able to copy the contents of the
disk image to the large partition, then made an alias and dropped that
into the Applications folder, which worked. I also installed Adobe
Acrobat Reader, which *did* automagically install itself into the
Applications folder, and I was then able to move it to the large
partition where I wanted it. I must say, in the PC world installers
all work the same way- they offer to install the app into a default
location, but give you the option of specifying another location. I'm
shocked that these Mac apps are so user unfriendly.

I'm too cheap to buy a book, I'll just continue searching online and
if that fails, asking questions.
