Sorry, can't be avoided unless you use third party software.
Someone might have written a script to automatically locate all the
songs in your library which are on an iPod and create an iTunes playlist
(from your library) to match it. Have a look at Doug's Applescripts
<http://dougscripts.com>.
Automatic sync (using a playlist) is much easier in the long run. Set up
a playlist in iTunes with the songs you want on your Nano, then set the
iPod to automatically sync with only that playlist (or with a small set
of playlists).
If you want to change what is on the iPod, just change the contents of
the "master playlist" and the next time you sync, the iPod will be
updated accordingly.
This also lets you select music for later without having your iPod on
hand while doing the selection.
