from the old iPod the songs on it don't show up, only folders named
"Calendars", "Contacts" and "Notes".

I'm sure there's a simple way of making this transfer but darned if I

figure it out!

There are third-party applications that will let you do this -- maybe try
versiontracker.com. Apple does not allow this because it makes it too easy to
illegally copy music. How did you get all those songs on the old nano? They had
to be in your iTunes library, right? So you should just be able to sync up the
new iPod from the library and you do not even have to bother with the old nano.

Yes, most of the songs (i.e. everything except what I may have
accidentally deleted) are within my much larger music library on my
MacBook but all mixed in with other stuff. Going back through the
entire collection and once again picking the ones I want on my iPod is
the tedious process I was hoping, perhaps vainly, to avoid.
