I have a Mac G5 (which isn't on a network) with M$ Office. I just sent
a friend with a Windows computer a short attachment file in M$ Word and
he emailed me back that his virus checker said that the file had a virus
and he won't open it. I know that Macs presently can't get viruses, but
could this file contain one that could infect his machine? If the
answer is yes, how about saving it as a pdf file? Would that kill it?
Yes, if you saved it as PDF, any Word Macro Virus that *might* exist in the Word document would be gone.
It's quite possible your friend's anti-virus utility is mistaken. Can you forward the attachment to jolly roger at pobox dot com so that I can have a look at it? I'd like to verify whether or not it truly does contain a virus.
The file you sent contains no threats, according to Symantec AntiVirus corporate edition version 10.0.1.1000 with LiveUpdate 7/21/2007 rev. 5. I think it's safe to say your friend's anti-virus utility is mistaken.
