Concur. About the only problem I've ever had regarding the
interoperability of archives has actually been with other Macs -- some
of the newer tools bundled with OS X don't deal gracefully with resource
forks, and can corrupt files being sent to other Macs, if they depend on
the resource fork. (Older fonts and text clippings both seem to get
eaten.)

However, the built-in contextual-menu Archive command preserves
resources, as does Stuffit. It's just the commandline 'tar' that doesn't.

Other than that, I've never had an issue with interoperability of
anything I've packaged up, whether in a .zip, .tgz/.tbz, .rar, or
something else. That's the benefit of open standards, or at least
well-understood ones.

Word documents ... they're another story ... (shudder).
