I agree with you that there is *plenty* of room for improvement in the Finder's column view (and in all the other views, for that matter).

If you really feel strongly about these issues, the best thing you can do is file a bug report with Apple so that they will track it in their development of future operating system releases. Go here and follow the instructions:
