In column view in finder, to be able to order the files by date

the head area of the directory window when column view is on not
needing to be confined to the width of the col under active

fit at the head of the "active" col.
I can't figure out what you're saying. Is there something easier than
just clicking on the column heading to order by that column?
Sorry, Barry, really I am. I was fighting off a very dangerous
gang at the time and the correct terminology is "List view" not
"column view". I like List view a lot. A real lot. But I want
that I should be able to order things there and then (at least
in respect to date modified) instead of going into the Column
view.
You're still not making sense to me, or there is a confusion of
terminology here. (Sorry, I am not trying to be difficult.) I will list
my perception of this:
List View (Cmd-2) is the view where you list the contents of one folder
only, and where the headers show Name, Type, Size, Modified Date, etc.
In that view, you can sort by any criteria in the headers by clicking on
the relevant header, and you can reverse the sort by re-clicking on the
header in question. (E.g., descending by date.) You can also change
which headers are shown by the command View Options (Cmd-J).
Column view (Cmd-3) is the view where you see several layers of folders
hierarchically in side-by-side columns. In that view, you can not change
the sort - it is always by name.
So - is the wish that you want to be able to change the sort in Column
view (according to this definition)? Because in List View you can,
unless I (and Barry, I think) fundamentally fail to grasp what you are
talking about. If this is indeed your wish, I concur - it would be nice
to sort the Column view by something else than name, though I am not
sure how this should be implemented, as there is no room for headers.
I said column view in the first place. I was not understood! I
tried a different tack. I will say anything whatsoever to be
understood ever so slightly. I will use wrong words, bad grammar,
anything at all, nothing is beneath me. Look, I am not from this
planet. I just try to fit in and get by.
The view I was talking about has vertical strips that show the
disks on the far left, the special folder aliases there too, the
next column to the right displays whatever is inside the selected
folder or disk on the left column; if a file is selected on the
left, the right column will display file info or even a
tremendously useful facility like a preview or movie/tune bar.
There can be many columns in this hierachy. This is the view I am
talking about and it was an innovation for OS X and was not in OS
< X and I like this innovation and so do many others. Let us call
this relatively new view Fred Nurk.
I want that Fred Nurk be able to display in more than the special
Apple "mostly alphabetical" way. I want that Fred Nurk be easily
persuaded to show the last modified file or folder at the top
when we wish it. I don't want Fred to disappear and Miss List
View to come on stage with the little triangles and all the cols
in that view able to be clicked at top to choose an order in
various categories. I do that already but my wish is nothing to
do with this. I wish for something that I have not got, not for
something I have got and use.
If you read my original post you will be able to see a suggestion
for headers, there is even a suggestion for a small row of neat,
tiny (not wide at all) symbols. In that beautiful original post
of mine, I packed in a shitload of brilliant things. But what
counts for the contents of my frenzied brain is different to what
happens in the real world. That is why you see me wishing for
things. I don't mean any harm to anyone.
