I usually keep my mac running, but had to shut down today for
electricians to do work. When I restarted (it's a G4 MDD, running
Tiger) the tower-light did a couple of flickers and a tone sounded. All
was well afterwards and the OS started up fine, but is this some sort
of warning?
AFAIK, all Mac's start up with one tone. 'C Major' if I remember correctly.
Nearly right.:-) - Older Macs such as the Performas 2xx, 4xx, LCs, SEs etc. start with the single tone sound. All newer Macs uses a polyphonic tune as startsound...
The flickering lights ought to be there too during startup.
Hm, I've only seen that the light gives a single blinking during the startup process. - On some models I've noticed that a flickering lamp indicates low PRAM battery power.
If you had more than *one* tone you may have a problem.
I think the electricians have you a bit paranoid.
If the polyphonic startup sound is replaced with a triple monophonic bip of apprx. 1 secs. duration, this normally is the 'Chime of Death', which indicates real severe hardware problems - primarely a burned off motherboard...
Just last week, I sent an old Sawttoth to the eternal Mac fileds [...rest in peace.:-))] - with a dead motherboard.
cheers, Erik Richard
