The other option is to use a third party app, like Dreamweaver. It's
available for Mac, for around $350. I've never used Dreamweaver or
similar web development tools. Is Dreamweaver really worth $350?
What are the alternatives?

Oddly enough I've been using Dreamweaver for about three months now.

I'm using it because I discovered that as I work at a university I can
get it very very cheap indeed.

There is a demo available so you can download it I think and check it
out.

I do feel that software is personal and so I think trying it out is the
best idea and don't take it too significantly that personally I have
found Dreamweaver not to suit me and in fact I'm now considering BBEdit
instead.

Dreamweaver does a very clever trick which is that you can edit text in
a window displaying the "design", in other words a window displaying
roughly that which will appear in a browser. However in practice I
don't ever really feel I want to do this anyway.

When I used Mac OS Classic (up until 3 months ago) I used Nisus Writer
(classic) for web page creation and although it is "officially" a word
processor I found it to be absolutely superb for web-site creation
because it is such a good text editor.

Unfortunately the OS X version of Nisus Writer, Nisus Writer Express,
is still nowhere near the text editing capabilities of the classic
version so it is not particularly suitable imho.

That's why I've downloaded BBEdit and I think you might like to give it
a try.

I've extremely good with GREP (Global Regular Expression Parsing) and
so BBEdit sort of comes naturally to me as an editor to use. As you
probably know GREP is a cool way of finding strings of text in a file
or files which have some common element. It's so useful for editing
web-pages in my experience.

It could be there are great things about Dreamweaver I've missed and
maybe these will be pointed out by others in this thread. I'd be
interested personally in that.

So... my suggestion is give BBEdit a try, but try Dreamweaver as well
:)

I bet there are other HTML editors I don't know about. Soon someone
will mention them no doubt. Try them as well.
