Re: [9.2.2] Any Mozilla 1.3.1 tweaks?

Hei Eric

Eric P. wrote:
I followed your advice as closely as I was able to in
changing Mozilla settings. I found a more recent
version
of Arial and Times New Roman fonts on the MS Web site,
so I downloaded and installed them. I also downloaded
all the updates you suggested, but a few of them are
not cooperating with me.

The Shockwave installer says it can't find a browser.
This happens regardless of the partition on which I
try to install.

So did I discover. - I found some of my older versions of Shockwave, and it turns out that the last one usable will be the Shockwave Player 7.0.0. This one is applicable - not to Mozilla, but to Netscape, - and if you choose Netscape, it will browse for Netscape, and then you just select Mozilla folder...strange... You can also install it to Netscape, if you still have it on your computer and then move the plugins to the Mozilla plugins folder - - or even better to the internet utility folder inside the system folder.

As for FileBuddy, after installing the updated
version,
I do get the box that asks for my name and serial
number when it launches, but I can just click OK and
use the program.

- Or just click the 'Not yet' button.:-))

The DIVX you mentioned is available for OS X only, so
I'm out of luck with that one for now.

I think I have the ver. 5.x somwhere for OS 9.x, if I find it, I just mail it to you...

Here's the description of Pulse from the Macupdate
site:

Pulse Player is a free plug-in for web browsers,
RealPlayer, and QuickTime 5 that allows you to view
and interact with content created using the Pulse
technology. No existing multimedia plug-in gives you
as advanced interaction and high quality streaming as
the Pulse Player. Pulse Player also supports 3D
hardware acceleration, Apple Macintosh systems
equipped with OpenGL v1.2 3D hardware acceleration.

Browsers supported:
Mac OS 9.x
o Netscape Navigator 4.x
o Netscape 6.x (and higher)
o Mozilla 1.x (and higher)
o AOL users can minimize the AOL window and
use Netscape when viewing Pulse content on the Mac.

Just reading the description, I now doubt that I need
this. Would you recommend keeping it, or deleting?

Hm, since you also have/use RealPlayer, I'd kep it for use with this player...

As for Kensington, yes, I use Kensington Turbo Mouse,
a trackball. It is the ADB type, and I have a litte
ADB/USB connector from that device to my keyboard. The
extensions it uses are Kensington Startup, Kensington
Startup ADB, Kensington USB Devices, and Kensington
USB Shim. I can't access the memory settings for any
of these, as they're not applications, but I checked
them with ResEdit, the way you showed me how to
increase the memory settings for Finder, and in that
location the memory of K-Startup is somewhere around
22MB, I think. The trackball performs beautifully
always :)

I also use TurboMouse on both my PM 9600 and Beige G3. I've also used trackballs due to problems with my hands and handwrists....

You should change the memory settings with ResEdit in the Kensington Startup, so min. size is aorund 2,5-3,5mb, and wanted size 3,5-4,5mb

Another note about my system: I was using an
Appearance
Theme called Tubular Sky Paper, because I dislike
Apple's default appearance, but the idea occured to
me that this might cause some problems, so I set back
to Apple's default appearance. Well, anything beats
Windows GUI, right? ;)

I have also had problems with the Tubular Sky Papers, but it was lowered a bit, when I changed memory allocation to the Appearance controlpanel. - A theme that I like very much on OS 9.x is the 'Original iMac Tuheme 1.0', - I don't know where I got it...

The only problems I still have with my system are:

* Desktop icon issue. I use an Applescript in my
Starup Items to arrange all desktop volume icons.
Occasionally, one of the icons will appear, after
another one on top of it gets moved over, with a
distorted picture, looking like a "shredded" icon.
If I copy/past an icon over it, my system freezes.
If I unmount and then mount the volume with
SilverLining, my system freezes. I can still use the
volume with the thrashed icon, but I don't like this,
so I restart once, twice, or three times to make it
appear as normal, or else I shut down, then restart,
and it appears as normal. I am at a loss as to what
causes this problem. My utility apps report no
problems with the volume.

For resetting desktop I use 'Desktop Resetter 2,9' - a real great tool for this. - No matter how much you're playing around with the placing of icons, just click 'reset', and it's all back to orig. preset.
http://tc.versiontracker.com/product/redir/lid/654109/DesktopResetter29.sit

It could be that there is a problem with a B-tree node in the directory file of the volume with the cribbled icon. - Here it would be great, if you had Norton DiskDoctor, which can restore icons too. - But you can try to rebuild the desktop druing startup.

Also disable the use of the built-in icon sets in Silverlining mostly can help solving this problem.

* MT-NewsWatcher Type 2 and 3 crashes. I have reported
about this on comp.sys.mac.system and on .apps, but
no one has been able to help me. I get this crash
(only the app, not the system as well) whenever I try
to post a reply to a long message, or if the app is
checking the server for new messages and I cancel the
process, then try to open any newsgroup. Immediately,
the application unexpectedly quits with a Type 2 or
Type 3 error. I can then launch the app again right
away, and use it as normal, as long as I don't do
those things that cause the crash. I would like to
find a solution to this as well. I trashed the prefs
and reset all the settings, but I still get the crash.

This problem has been all way back in MT-NW 2.x too. It's a problem with the memory handling. I have no solution to this - maybe except to allocate lots and lots of memory to it - 50-60mb in min. and 80-90mb in wanted size...

That's all I can think of now. Mostly, everything
works better with the new processor and RAM. The next
thing I want to do is make a home for Tiger, and then
buy and install Tiger. I almost got a copy from eBay,
but the discs were gray, and someone advised me that
they would not work with my system, so I avoided
wasting money :) I will get a hard drive (not sure
what kind to get right now), and then get the version
of Tiger that will work with my computer.

Yes, 'grey' Tiger disks are dedicated versions for a specific computer and can normally not run on all other computers. So you need the black-faced retail box.

One more thing: I bought an M-Audio Solo Firewire
audio interface :) I have to wait till I have Tiger
to use it, and I look forward to using it, as I have
never had an audio interface before, and I know that
this will open up whole new worlds for me, and greatly
increase the usefulness of my computer.

Oh dear! - I was looking at this one lately, but ended up buying a Behringer F-Control FCA-202 FW adapter to work together with my Behringer MX series mixer. - Also because I still prefer analog sound input as main input method. Great card!!

Thanks again for all your help! I hope all is well
with you, and I look forward to hearing from you again
soon.

Yes, now you should be 100% allowed to pass my filtering.:-) - as written I forgot to save the changes.:-)

Cheers from a really hot 27 degree celsius late summer's day in Denmark!
