With single layer media so very, very cheap these days, I was looking
for a program to shrink a typical 7 gb DVD movie down to about 4.5 gb.
Even without the extras the main feature is usually at least 5 gb so its
just slightly too big. Any recommendations? I think Windows users use
DVD Shrink but for Mac?
Nothing that is both one-click like DVD Shrink and free.
Just for yucks I tried DVD Shrink with Darwine and CrossOver beta/demo
on my Macbook. It installs but does not run in Darwine. It installs
and runs in CrossOver. A test run entailed:
Tried to read the disc; doesn't work because what Windows calls a
"drive" is really a filesystem and they don't have a 1:1 correlation.
Tried to read the DVD's VIDEO_TS directory; worked but movie is
encrypted and DVD Shrink does not detect the encryption at that level.
Ripped disc with Mac the Ripper, full disc mode then read the new
directory with DVD Shrink; that worked. Wrote out an image file; can't
burn directly to disc so need the intermediate image. Burned the image
with Disk Utility to DVD-RW (so I don't waste anything :), played just
fine with DVD Player and my player deck.
