Re: The price of a MacPro

Had a PC friend email me and scream about the $4000 price of a
MacPro, I had persuaded him to seriously consider getting a Mac
and he was most interested considering the Windows capability as
well. This is just for the box. He remarked that you get a lot of
PC for $4000! I suggested an iMac and have not heard from him
since...

OK, what is my question, (for those who like one)? It is this:
has Apple lost me a friend for ever more?

Can't tell about your friendship, but you may want to check out and
share this article with your friend:

All prices in US $.
$869 for a 2.66 ghz processor? I can buy a P4 cpu 2.8 ghz used most
days for about $100 - $125.

$300 for 2 x 1 gbs ram? Used they're about $35 each.

$94 for a DVD burner? Just bought one used for under $20. Single layer
but who uses dual layer with the media so ridiculously expensive?

You see, what bugs PC users is the blatant inflating of prices that one
faces when buying Apple products. You're buying a nice MB ($200 max
online) and a really nice CPU which most people simply don't need.
Everything else is just PC stuff. RAM, burners, hard drives, are all
cheap now. Nice video cards are expensive but few people need them.
And if you do, drop a couple of hundred and be happy. There is no way
to justify the parts cost of $2150 for a the cheapest Mac Pro.
USED prices for a real laugh!
2 x 512 mb DDR = $40
160 gb Sata drive $50
DVD burner $20
Case $20 or 3 times that for a nice one.
Basic PCI-e video card $40 - $80

Oh - they give you a mouse and keyboard (which almost nobody wants
anyway).

Now you see why the OS X86 community exists. They analyse, they add the
figures, they shake their head, they find another option. You can build
the equivalent (for 95% of the users) machine for about $200-$300. $300
- $450 if you're terrified of the used market.

Add a decent 19" LCD monitor for about $200 and you're laughing! I
bought mine used for $160 several months ago so they're even cheaper
now.
