Just went through a *big* hassle with an add-on package AuthorTools that
manipulates notebooks and notebook contents in Mathematica on the Mac.
Turned out the problem was leaving the .nb prefix off the notebooks
involved. The basic Mathematica app was OK with this; the package
wasn't.
Please tell me you reported that as a bug in addition to the helpful
warning to users here.
Well, I also described it on the comp.soft-sys.math.mathematica
newsgroup, but didn't attempt a bug report to either Apple or Wolfram.
It's not an Apple bug that causes a piece of 3rd-party software to not
recognize a valid file because the name is "wrong."
Reasons for not doing so:
1) Don't know how to; have all I can handle trying to keep up with the
relevant newsgroups themselves -- and have had some negative experiences
trying to report bugs elsewhere in the past.
Even serious shareware developers typically have an easy-to-find
mechanism to report bugs, though. At Wolfram's site, under the Services
& Resources link there's a menu that offers options that include
contacting technical support or offering a suggestion. Either of those
would be relevant, I'd think.
2) Bug reports to developers not archived by search engines, e.g.,
Google Groups (at least, I don't think so), therefore much less
available to ordinary users who encounter the bug in the future.
That's generally true, which is why I acknowledged that posting the tip
here was useful.
If developers really don't have someone tasked to monitor these groups,
they should have (there are a couple of Wolfram guys who do monitor the
Mathematica newsgroup).
Monitoring unmoderated and/or general purpose discussion forums for bug
reports and feature requests has roughly the return on investment that
panning for gold in a randomly selected stream in the US does.
