I use the command tab a lot to switch but it is a patchy solution to a
flawed

initial, idea because, for starters, one has to go serially and keep
pressing

the tab and blowed if you go too fast past the app you want... in the app
drop down in pre X one simply chose and that was that. It is often the case
that designers make new things simply to be different and catchy without
thinking through what was really excellent from the past and incorporating
the good...

But after entering command-tab to bring up the panel of active applications
one can use tab to go forward in the llst or shift-tab to go backward. In
addition one can just click on the application one wants to be active.

Its like getting good at the piano!

Look, while all this is fine, the truth is that all this messing
about has become necessary because Apple dropped two crucial
things that made for easy management of the desktop, one was the
app drop down, tear-offable, the other was the window collapse
into the top bar. You could mostly see right there in front of
you which apps were open by the strips lying about, you click the
bar on the window and it opens up and you were right there with
one click in the app you want and operating on the window you
want (in most cases). No need to be dextrous, find keys to go
through the icons, find other key combos to go the other way. And
when you get the app you want you still need to find the window
you want (the dock is not going to help, they are too small to
tell).
