Appleworks 6 (and Clarisworks before it) can work with JPEG images. It
can do lots with images - particularly in relation to page layout and
resizing.

Open a Paint or Drawing document and just drag it in. Alternatively open
a new document and use Insert from the file menu, making sure that file
type is set to All Available.

The Paint module is certainly very limited but it works.
GraphicConverter, as suggested, is an infinitely better bitmap image
editor. The Drawing module is extremely competent for page layouts,
Desktop Publishing style.

Busted. I tried dragging and dropping gif and jpeg files onto the
running Appleworks application and it didn't open them.

My usual method is a little different than Adrian's: I open AppleWorks
and bring up the Open... dialog, showing All Files. I tried it just now
with a png because I never tried one of those before. It opens in the
paint module.

However, I did create a paint document and drag a gif into it. It
filled the document and could only be erased or painted on. Nothing to
manipulate the image was possible, AFAICT. Once a graphic is placed in
a paint document, all you can do with it is move it around. If the JPEG
resolution is greater than 72dpi, it's converted to fill the screen.

The OP hasn't explained what they're trying to do with the JPEG. If
they want to do anything like resize it to place it on a page, I don't
see Appleworks offering that option. Nor do I think it was intended for
this.

You can resize in the paint module. You can do more useful stuff in the
drawing module than in paint, as Adrian said.
