My opinion - not a "theory" - is that once you accept something for

"worth", in that sense, exactly what you paid for it.

One certainly can complain or be unhappy with free software. Whether or
not those complaints or unhappiness are reasonable in the eyes of the
developer is something else entirely.

Further, the notion that "freeware" is somehow a noble concept of
generosity to the world is a tad extreme. I don't presume to understand
the motives of those who give away their work - if you want it to be
justified, ask them. Personally, I prefer to be paid for my work - an
exchange of "value" for "value".

How mercenary of you.

I wrote the original Emacs-Lisp library for POP3. I wrote it for the
Windows 98 Emacs port because of limitations in Windows 98 that
prevented the standard movemail program from running as a child process.
I gave that code to the FSF because I had written something cool and I
wanted others to be able to use it, too.

Applying that standard, if you "value" your work at "nothing", i.e.,
give it away for "free", then don't be surprised if the beneficiary of
your gift assigns the same "value" to that work.......

Your standard is... yours. It certainly isn't mine.
