I do use columns often for certain purposes, and would welcome a mode in
which:
--columns with narrow data compressed to minimum width
--coumns with wider data expanded to some wider width, which made as
many wide names visible as feasible, even though *really* wide names
still got cut off.
User-settable number of columns would also be nice.
As would a "tooltip" capability, in which pausing the pointer over a
name produced, after a short delay, an expanded box with the name in it.
This last one is already present. Additionally, if you hold down the
Option key while pausing over a "too long" name, you avoid the delay.
